Life can be really brutal. Other humans can be really brutal, and it can feel like an affront to our innate sense of innocence and belonging. For me, it hasn’t been something that simply unfolds or grows. It has been something I’ve had to fight for, again and again, to not let be buried. And what I’ve learned over time is that life itself wants to keep living. Sometimes the work is to simply not close ourselves off to it.

It is easy to look at this and think in big, dramatic terms about collapse, decline, or the end of things. But what does that kind of looking actually do to us? It pulls our attention away from where we have influence. It keeps our nervous systems braced for a future we cannot control. Over time, that drains the energy we would need to stay steady, connected, and effective right here, where our actions actually matter.

Living inside contexts that do not orient to what matters most to you has consequences, even when you are capable, perceptive, and sincere. Effort increases, but clarity does not keep pace. You spend energy not only evaluating your own reactions and choices, but constantly translating yourself in relation to others. You are trying to act, speak, and participate among people who are not registering the same signals or working within shared meaning-making.

Exceptionalism makes the human the source of wisdom, intelligence, and/or power. Initiation teaches the human to survive contact with the source without lying about it.

Part of what feeds cynicism is not just pain, but a narrowing of the arena in which pain is encountered. When suffering is held only inside the human sphere, inside social systems, histories, betrayals, injustices, and personal loss, it becomes unbearable. Not because we are actually isolated, but because suffering is held inside too small a field. No wider field to hold it. No intelligence large enough to metabolize it.
